I was asked today to provide some insights to a very committed career woman who will soon be a mum for the first time. My short advice was this: “Suspend all your own expectations of yourself, your career and pretty much everything, and then ‘manage’ the expectations of others (or, more realistically, your perceptions of their expectations). Taking the pressure off like this will save you and give you the space to work out how on earth to best look after the wonderful creature that has crashed into your world”.
What’s your advice? This article here is good on the importance of realistic expectations… I have taken a while to learn that there are no Supermoms, just surviving moms! http://www.thegrindstone.com/2011/08/31/career-management/working-mothers-need-more-realistic-expectations-362/
